FREE SECURITY / ANTIVIRUS / ANTISPYWARE LINKS:
EDITOR'S NOTE: I removed ClamWin and AVG because of rampant false-positives. This list may change without notice, depending on my expert view of the best programs available. Avast! Home Edition Free Antivirus: Part 1 of my personal 4-part FREE antivirus arsenal. Avast! seems to do pretty well with scanning, but it really shines when catching those virus attacks that come out when you're surfing the web. This is called "Active" or "Real-Time" protection. So when some java monster tries to strike you down while you're checking out your favorite online chat room, this will put a nice wall between you and the villains. There are some extras available with the commercial version of this program, however if you use Windows Task Scheduler to run "C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashQuick.exe c:\" (yeah, you might wanna copy and paste that into your "Add New Task" thingy) once every weekday, you will pretty much have it covered--without paying a DIME. If you use Firefox as your web browser, you can also use AshQuick as your virus scanner by using the "tools/Add-Ons/Download Statusbar/Options" item. SpyBot Search & Destroy: This is Part 2 of my personal 4-part FREE antivirus arsenal. This is a FANTASTIC free spyware removal program. It's proven itself to the online community to be very safe & effective, and it is the ONLY free program of its type that is of this caliber. The only program that even comes close is "Adaware Pro"--but Adaware costs money--and might not be any better at all. SpyBot uses the latest in detection and removal technology It has won awards from PC Magazine, PC World, ChipOnline, Softpedia and many more -- GET THIS PROGRAM OR BE SORRY. SuperAntiSpyware: (Added February 14th, 2009) - Part 3 of my personal 4-part FREE antivirus arsenal. At first, I thought, with a name like "SuperAntiSpyware", this thing had to be a fake, or rogue, or some kind of bogus trojan itself. But it's not. After a bunch of research about my sister's computer, I figured out from home that it was probably infected with the "Vundo" virus, and that SuperAntiSpyware was probably the best thing to remove it. So I took it over to my sister's house, along with the rest of my arsenal, and sure enough, SAS did it. Cleaned that computer up good as new. It should be noted that SAS is a commercial product, and the FREE HOME version is very limited. But I like to keep it installed, for those tough-to-remove situtations. HiJackThis: Here's Part 4 of my personal 4-part FREE antivirus arsenal. HiJackThis is ONLY for really advanced computer users -- and probably is only to be used as a next-to-last resort (the real last resort being your rescue/restore disc that came with your computer). This program can help you get rid of browser hijacks, self-running tasks that attack your computer while Windows is booting, and more. It's FREE, and VERY powerful -- but be careful, it can also be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing with it. It gives you the ability to delete tasks and entries into the registry, and if you're not sure what's going on, it's easy to delete something that is really okay to be running (like, say, the operating system!). Get this, but be careful with it. Comodo Personal Firewall: Comodo Personal Firewall is a Windows 2000/XP firewall, that filters both inbound as well as outbound traffic. Among its features are the ability to detect application hijacking attempts via its application and component behavior monitor, self protection against termination attempts by malware, protection of your PC during startup, etc. Note: they require you to activate the firewall and supply your email address. Scar5 Simple File Shredder: This is a cool little program that searches your recycle bin and all your temp folders, and shreds everything -- 7 times! That's the standard the Department of Defense uses! It also has a companion program called "Restoration" which it allows you the option of downloading, which will retrieve files you've emptied out of your recycle bin, or other deleted files, as long as they haven't been shredded already. It also gives you the option to shred your hard drive's free space, leaving no trace of anything someone else might be able to use in your empty space! Active @ Killdisk: When you use a standard delete command, or format a hard drive, it is fairly simple to recover deleted data or files from your hard drive, even if you've emptied the recycle bin. This can be a particularly bad problem if you've upgraded to a new hard drive and are looking to sell or recycle your old hard drive. Thieves and no-gooders will use these simple and free utilities to restore data that could ruin your life. Active @ Killdisk is a great program which will completely wipe out your hard drive -- what we would traditionally call a "low-level format", by filling your entire hard drive with "00" zero's, wiping out partitions and/or entire drives. It doesn't matter if it's FAT, FAT32, NTFS, or LINUX... it's history. *** USE WITH CAUTION & FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! -- THIS PROGRAM CAN WRECK YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM IF USED IMPROPERLY! *** Ad-Aware: I would be neglectful to omit this fine product, although I much prefer Spybot over it. "10 years of malware experience combined in one dynamic application. Ad-Aware - Anniversary Edition offers radically improved performance and efficiency, along with comprehensive malware protection. With real-time monitoring, threat alerts, and automatic updates you can rest easy knowing that you are protected."

It allows you to customize your photo size/location/effects, font size & color, and much much more. A very versatile tool, whether you're an experienced graphic designer or a novice with a tight Christmas budget. You'll never buy another calendar! JAlbum: A really great slideshow and web album creator. This one really blew me away. This is one of those programs that makes me think, "Why did I ever waste my time with anything else?" and "Where was this program all my life?" If you look around the web site here, you'll see several places where I've got photos and pictures of all kinds of stuff. Most of those places have been made by hand, like the Wedding and Pets sections -- and it took LONG HOURS to do that stuff. But as you can see, in less time than it took me to make those simple pages, I got about 1800 more pictures up in the Photo Gallery section, using JAlbum. Piece of cake. JAlbum Skin Repository: JAlbum comes with a lot of really cool skins to make your web albums look awesome, and here's a great page where people have made their own skins for you to do your slideshows with! Wowsers! Tux Paint: Here's a great drawing program for your kids. Tux Paint is geared more for children from ages 3 to 12, and has a cute and friendly interface, big colorful buttons, and a cute mascot that encourages kids and makes learning to draw FUN and exciting! This is a great way to get kids acquainted with digital drawing. GIMP: This is an AWESOME drawing program. GIMP stands for "Gnu Image Manipulation Program". Under the Gnu Public License (GPL) agreement, GIMP stays FREE forever. Like OpenOffice, it is written by the public, and then various components are voted upon before implementation. It is touted as being the PhotoShop of the Free World. This program is amazing. If you don't want to pay all your hard-earned dollars to Adobe, Jasc, or Corel, you don't have to sacrifice a bit of quality. This program is suitable for novice to professional artists alike. IconSuite: A fully featured Icon Editor capable of creating Icon(.ico) and Cursor(.cur) files containing icons of different sizes (16x16, 32x32, 48x48) and color depths (2, 16, 256, True Color). your

w, a,
s, d keys. Sometimes you will have to jump over steeps to
complete a level. You can jump with the space bar.Raid On Fort Apocalypse: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Added
January 25th, 2009) Raid on Fort Apocalypse is a Freeware game
[originally a commercial title for the Commodore 64 - a great 4-way
scrolling helicopter action game!] created for the
RetroRemakes.com Competition 2008 in limited spare time over
the
course of just over 3 months. It was entered in Category 3:
Sequels That Weren't. That's right, we have not tried to recreate the
original Fort Apocalypse by Synapse Software, but rather an imagined
"sequel" - something that has the flavour of the original yet tries to
add some new experiences and ideas as well.Flipside of the Divine: (Added November 19th, 2008) Flipside of the divine is a unique action game set in the world of the ancient Aztec mythology. You play the role of an eagle warrior and your goal is to find a way through the dangerous and deceptive world of the gods. By manipulating platforms and flipping enemies down into the abyss you use both your mind and your fighting skills to get to the portal that will take you to the next level! Gem Towers : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Added
October 25th, 2008) Gem Towers is (quoted from GAOTD forum) a 3D puzzle game. You
must remove the
required number of gems in order to progress to the next level.
You do this by swapping gems so that they create a line of 3 (or
more) of the same color. You can only move the gems if they are
going to create a set. You can spin the whole gem grid in
full
3D, and gems have 26 possible neighbors, so you need to look
carefully at the grid from each angle, to see if there is
anything you've missed. As with most games of this nature, if you
stack them correctly you can set off entire chain reactions. It's
not impossible to finish a whole level with just one swap. If you
get totally stuck you can sacrifice one of your lives in order to
skip the level. The further you play, the more colours enter the
grid (and therefore, the harder it gets). Everything looks
lovely - the gems glisten and reflect the light, the controls are
smooth and the whole game very responsive. It isn't perfect
however - the random nature of the gem placement means that you
can often start on a really difficult level, only to have to skip
it in order to stand a chance on the next. And sometimes the new
gems drop onto the grid too fast for you to be able to see
clearly what is underneath them. But having said that, this is a
fine release and for a free game - a great time killer.
Originally released on Paul Varney's web site (now
defunct....
please correct me if I'm wrong). The program has been patched
so
that it no longer automatically goes to the web site and
repackaged in a new installer package. See some video of it
HERE or screenshots HERE.Rolling Madness 3D: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Added March 8th, 2008)
Luca Elia's
AWESOME remake of the classic Atari arcade hit, Marble Madness -
brought RIGHT up to speed with today's graphics & classic
music! There is now a full 3D mode in addition to the usual
isometric perspective one, a "pastel drawing" rendering mode and
various camera placement options. The 3D engine is based on
OpenGL, SDL takes care of the interaction with the OS and FMOD is
used for sound. This means the game is as multi platform as
possible, and non windows builds should be fairly
straightforward. The whole 6 level world is present, as you
will
see from the screen shots. It's free and nag-free, and comes with
an installer.EikSoft Games: (Added March 8, 2008) Here you will find 2D games that cover many genres. They span from puzzle, to platformer, to action and beyond. Aside from completed works, there are also a few projects that are still works in progress. It is important to note that almost all releases are accompanied with full source code. This means you have access to every line of code that went into making a particular game. For fellow programmers, this is a great opportunity to learn how to create games of your own! Smart Cook: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a
clever "Bejeweled" type game, with a fruit chef kind of theme.
Simple rules, intuitive gameplay and cute sound track!
Your
objective is to group all fruits into sets of three. Then they'll
go right into Rockin' Chef's juicer and you'll get points. The
game gets progressively more and more difficult as you advance.
Smart Cook is an amazingly engaging game. Chances are you will
launch it "just for fifteen minutes" get unglued from your
computer screen only two hours later (that, by the way is an
overly optimistic scenario). There are other side effects, like
office skirmishes and family quarrels about who gets to play
first. You friends and family members can enjoy this pizzazz
puzzle too. Simply try it 100% free, and you are guaranteed to
become a Smart Cook aficionado in no time.Spice Trade: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Colonize

Europe has been a global super power when it started colonizing
other continents. But if history had gone a different way? What
would Europe be like if Asia had prevailed? Abu Al-Qazzaz is the
main character in Spice Trade. He is a poor young man from
Baghdad, who has inherited a house and some land.. oh, and he
wants to get married too. Abu decides to try his luck in the

a trade monopoly. Will Abu be able to beat out the Europeans in
the spice trade? Could Europe have been different? How? You

all
the bonuses on the road, and still make it to the next checkpoint

everyone else to the finish line!Born To Be Big: Here's a cool game that is obviously based on the age-old "Chomp" game from the 8-bit history (or "Something Fishy" if you play Cell Phone games), but with snazzy new graphics and super-smooth gameplay. You are a little fish, and in order to get bigger, you gotta eat little fish, while avoiding being eaten by the bigger fish. Soon you'll be big enough to eat them, but you gotta start small. A game that's great for all ages! Babala: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Babala is a
simple logical game with elements of move strategy. At the start
of the contest, the enemy figures "Balabaks" are situated on the
playing field. In fending them off, you'll have only limited
moves and shots (or laying of mines) allowed during your each
round, after which the enemy is permitted a measured advance. If
Balabak reaches you, you're mugged, you lose. The enemy can't
shoot.Crown and Cutlass: Crown and Cutlass is a 3d pirate action/adventure game in the spirit of the old Pirates! game. It is simultaneously being developed in Linux and Windows, with a strong emphasis on cross-platform compatability. The project is still early on in development. Trackballs: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A
great clone of
Marble Madness, right down to the steelies and squishable

original classic glory, I'm sure you'll see this as just the next
logical chapter! Cool, fun and even FUNNY at
times!Glest: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's

wildly popular WarCraft games. Not only do you get the game,
which is immediately downloadable for Windows, and portable to
just about any other platform (did I read correctly on the web
site that they even ported it to a PLAYSTATION!?) , but you can
also download level editors, a 3D exporter (so that you can edit

Since development on the game is not finished (and I suspect
the
same is true of virtually any good program anyway), it's hard to
pass judgment on the interface. I think it could use a
little
polish. However, the game is really fun, and those of you who
love Railroad games will think so, too. This is a Java game,

appear in equal time intervals).Xenon 2000: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If

FreeRAM XP Pro: Freeware application to free and optimize your computer's RAM (Random Access Memory), resulting in an increase in system performance and productivity. Automatically configures itself for ease of use and also features advanced options and customizability. More options and customizability ProduKey: ProduKey is a small utility that displays the ProductID and the CD-Key of MS-Office, Windows, Exchange Server, and SQL Server installed on your computer. You can view this information for your current running operating system, or for another operating system/computer - by using command-line options. This utility can be useful if you lost the product key of your Windows/Office, and you want to reinstall it on your computer. RegSeeker: RegSeeker is a perfect companion for your Windows registry. The added bonus for this one is that it WORKS. You've probably scoured all over the net and tried half a dozen programs that claim to do the same thing, only to find out it's just infected your PC with something, or it stops halfway and tells you to buy it. But alas, your friendly web host BRYCE is just the type of guy to subject his computer to all sorts of rigorous torture just to make sure it's safe to pass it on to you. So there you have it. I've tried this program, and it works, it works GOOD, and it's totally FREE. RegSeeker includes a powerful registry cleaner and can display various informations like your startup entries, several histories (even index.dat files), installed applications and much more. With RegSeeker you can search for any item inside your registry, export/delete the results, open them in the registry. RegSeeker also includes a tweaks panel to optimize your OS. Now RegSeeker includes a file tool to search for duplicate files, bad shortcuts and more. RegSeeker is FREE for personal use only. DriverMax: DriverMax is a new program which allows you to easily reinstall all your Windows drivers. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Simply export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place! Most of the situations when Windows is running slower are caused by faulty driver installations. Windows stores all versions of older drivers just in case you want to go back; sometimes it messes up older versions with more recent ones. The Export Wizard will only export the drivers you select by copying the needed files to a folder or a compressed ZIP file. After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.

FMOD is the sound engine used by KraMixer and is also used by Playstation 2 and XBox game authors. It is proven to be one of the fastest sound engines available today." Uses a graphical interface similar to a DJ mixing console to beatmatch and layer effects on two separate channels, as well as organizing a playlist for song order. Now includes a feature to record live mixes to an audio file. VoluMouse: Volumouse provides you a quick and easy way to control the sound volume on your system - simply by rolling the wheel of your wheel mouse. It allows you to define a set of rules for determining when the wheel will be used for changing the sound volume. For example: You can configure Volumouse to use your mouse wheel for volume control when the Alt key is hold down, when the left mouse button is down, when the mouse cursor is over the taskbar, and so on. When the conditions that you define are not satisfied, your mouse wheel will be used for the regular scrolling tasks, exactly as before. The Great Kazoo: The Great Kazoo was designed to create interesting, randomly generated music / noise from directories containing sound files (.aif, .wav, .mp3) on your computer. You can fiddle with the randomly generated music in realtime. Excellent when using acid loops. Also generates randomly generated Kazoo music, (but how long can you handle it??) Use our recording tool above to record your creations. Try setting up a directory of sound loops, some drums and a couple of piano or guitar loops plus whatever else and see what kind of randomly generated music you can create. Some sample loops included. MP3myMP3 Recorder 2.0: Record internet radio and save to mp3 or wav. Record streaming audio from the Internet, microphone, or any other source for that matter. MP3myMP3 Recorder works directly with your system sound card - if you can hear it, you can record it! Use the scan tool to list all mp3, wav, aif, swa, or sun au audio files on your computer - then play and record portions of any of these files. MP3myMP3 Recorder offers customizable colors, timer, on top mode, and skinning. MODPlug Tracker: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ever wonder how

in the day when the only place you'd hear this type of music was

Note that the Mozilla Suite (see above) browser comes with a cut-down version of this (they are the same company, after all) . If you are having lots of pop-up and adware problems, check out our SECURITY section, get it fixed, and then use Firefox instead of IE. Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox: This here program is a winner. It allows you to right-click on an object, and BLOCK it permanently. Not only that, but you can also type in (or copy and paste) blocking patterns into its list. For instance, you could block all content regarding one person's friend account. Or you could type in patterns for content that shows up all the time in your home page that you don't want to see (I do this all the time). This is a great way to get rid of unwanted advertisements, and to shield your eyes from obscenities. If you look on a search engine, you'll find plenty of useful Adblock patterns to go with this thing! Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox: Want to tweak your online browsing experience? FREE VIDEO SOFTWARE LINKS:
So, with that warning out of the way, let's have some great material for those of us who are legally editing our OWN videos. Microsoft Windows XP comes with its own video editor, Movie Maker 2. With some proper resources, and a lot of patience, users can truly "Do Amazing Things" with this program. So first, I'll outline a few programs & packages that will be super useful for those people who want to get into video editing using Movie Maker 2. Auto
Gordian
Knot: AutoGK is THE program for
transcoding video
files into DivX or XviD AVI format. I am using it to move the
Mpeg2 files from my Sony HDR-SR7 into a format I can use with
Movie Maker 2, so that I can edit down material for use on
YouTube. Or, if you're already happy with the output, DivX
and
Xvid files are nice & compact for keeping around on your PC
just the way they are. AutoGK makes it S-I-M-P-L-E.
Simply
select the input file, and either add it to the job queue, or
just press start. It'll put the AVI file in the same folder
right next to the original file. It provides much more
advanced
options for those who really want to tweak their settings, but if
you're not interested in that, all the work is pretty much done
for you.
K-Lite Codec Pack: (Added March 17th, 2009) This is a useful video package for a multitude of reasons. First, it includes just about every playback codec that's available for the PC. Using this, you can playback DVDs, XviD, DivX, Mpeg, RealMedia, and tons more -- just using Windows Media Player! It also comes with Media Player Classic, which is based on the early 6.x versions of Media Player, and has none of the overhead or incompatibility issues that we've come to expect with Media Player 9 and later. Another great reason to install this program is that Flask and Gordian Knot both use playback codecs to READ the input file before transcoding into other formats. Having more codecs, put simply, means you can transcode FROM more formats TO more formats. Panasonic DV Codec: A very high-quality, low-compression video codec, which can be used by Flask, and/or other video compression programs. This one is useful when you want professional results, because it introduces very little artifacting (those little "glitches" that show up in the screen as a result of compression), making it possible to use Movie Maker 2 (or any other video editor) with output that is as good as, or better than, what you originally recorded. I am using this with Flask to transfer recording that I am making into professional music videos. Neo's World: (Added March 17th, 2009) This is a single portal web site where you can access an incredible library of effects, video clips, transitions, and information for use with Windows Movie Maker! This is a must-see, and I have consolidated many of the links on this page since I discovered Neo's World. How to Chroma Key in Windows Movie Maker: You've seen it done in your local newscasts, and virtually every movie made these days uses it. Someone stands in front of a blue or green screen, and images or animation come up behind them. This is done using a technique called "Chroma Keying", and this article will teach you how to do it--for FREE! Windows Movie Maker Winter Fun Pack 2003: Make Your Movies Come Alive! Dazzle your friends and family by winterizing your home movies with special transitions and effects created by Pixelan Software. With a few clicks of the mouse you can create falling snow on a warm summer day or a faux snowball fight right in your living room. Windows Movie Maker Creativity Pack: Make home movies like a pro with Windows Movie Maker 2 and this brand new collection of creative extras, including video titles, music and sound effects. Whatever the occasion, there's something here that will help you make your home movies even better! Okay, now for something completely different... ;) Sqirlz Lite, Morph & Water Reflections: Sqirlz Lite lets you animate, bend, distort and loop a selected part of any image by drawing an outline around it, and then a second outline to define the shape to be molded into. Any kind of image can be distorted and animated - particularly effective for things like text, logos, and photographs of people etc. The animation effects available include: continuous flowing motion, and simple to-and-fro motion - both of which can be applied to any sort of distortion and looping that you can come up with. Sqirlz Morph allows you to mark features on several images, and the program mixes the images so that each feature on one image moves smoothly to the corresponding feature on the other images - a technique widely used in the film industry. Multi-morphing is available - any number of images can be morphed together, so try mixing all your family's faces at the same time! Sqirlz Water Reflections is a way of adding rippling pools of water, and rain or snow effects, to images or existing AVI videos. The pools can be animated to give lifelike rippling reflections of the scene above them, and can be of any shape. Choose from a variety of ripple shapes, and control details such as wave size, perspective, water transparency and flow direction. The raindrops and snow flakes can be adjusted in many ways, including size, speed, direction, transparency and scene depth effects. Animations can be saved as Macromedia Flash (SWF) files, animated GIF files, AVI video clips, and sets of bitmap, JPEG and TIFF files. Anim8or: Anim8or is a 3D computer animation program that is designed to allow straightforward creation of animations. You interactively create and edit objects, figures, and scenes directly on the computers screen. The basic interface is similar to most 3D animation and CAD programs. Credit Maker: This application came about because of one man's frustration in getting a Hollywood style scrolling credits in the video editing software he was using. He wanted to be able to control the font, font size, font color, add images to the scroll and how credits were grouped. When he could not find an existing application that could do that he decided to write his own. Wax: Wax is a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. From what I understand, the interface is pretty tough to use, but it is FREE and works pretty good. The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects, so that you can compose your dream video sequence with ease every time. Wax can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors. Currently Wax can work as a plug-in with Sony Vegas®, Pure Motion EditStudio and Adobe Premiere® and work for integrating with various other NLEs is in progress. Avid Free DV: Avid's free software lets you get in the Avid door for free. Fairly difficult to use interface, although over a dozen pretty good tutorials are available from Avid's website. Originally developed for Windows XP, FreeDV now runs on Macs on the OS X platform. As Avid puts it, "Perfect for students, DV camera owners, video enthusiasts or anyone exploring video editing - Avid Free DV software is an easy, free way to join the Avid family and test-drive the industry-standard editing interface used by more professionals than any other video editing solution. Avid Free DV is feature-streamlined, standalone software which includes basic video and audio editing capabilities, up to two streams of real-time effects and support for both Windows XP and Macintosh OS X platforms." Super: I could tell you all kinds of great stuff about this program. It can convert virtually any format of video and/or audio into virtually any other format. In fact, the authors actually challenge you (on their web site) to try and find something it can't convert into something else. Suffice it to say, if you have your video or audio in one format (i.e. Quicktime, DivX, flv), and need it in another (WMV, 3g2, MPEG-2), this program can almost definitely do it. I've given you the shortcut to the program, but if you care to wade (and I do mean wade!) through their laborious sea of information they have on their site, please click HERE. DVD Flick: DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation. It can import WMV, AVI, MPG and just about any other format to DVD - SUPER easy to use -- This is a MUST-SEE.

Note that the Netscape Suite is just a version of Mozilla Suite (also listed on this page) -- BUT -- THIS is the program I used to make this web site!. Most of those places have been made by hand, and it took me long hours to do that. In the future, that's going to be a thing of the past. I'll be using JAlbum for all my pictures from now on! Period. JAlbum Skin Repository: JAlbum comes with a lot of really cool skins to make your web albums look awesome, and here's a great page where people have made their own skins for you to do your slideshows with! Wowsers!

FREE DISK UTILITY LINKS: PING (PartImage Is Not Ghost): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Added
March 31st, 2009) - PING is a "Live CD" which you download as an
ISO image and burn onto a blank CD-R. You can then boot from this
CD and use it to backup or restore virtually ANY partition, be it
Windows, Linux, or any of a large variety of filesystems. You can
create a full image of your partition and store it on an external USB
drive, a local hard disk, or even a shared network drive on another
computer somewhere (even over the interrnet if you know how!) You
can also use PING to create a bootable hidden partition so that you can
boot from it using a boot manager.Bulk Rename Utility: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Added
January 13th, 2009) -
Bulk Rename Utility is a free file renaming software for Windows. Bulk
Rename Utility allows you to easily rename files and entire folders
based upon extremely flexible criteria. Add date/time stamps,
replace numbers, insert text, convert case, add auto-numbers, process
folders and sub-folders....plus a whole lot more! Rename
multiple
files quickly, according to many flexible criteria. Rename
files
in many ways: add, replace, insert text into file names. Convert case,
add numbers. Remove or change file extensions. Check the
detailed
preview before renaming. Rename photos using EXIF meta data
(i.e.
"Date Picture Taken", "Resolution" and other information embedded in
all JPG photo files) Rename your holiday pictures from a meaningless
dsc1790.jpg to NewYork1.jpg in a flash. Rename MP3 files
using
ID3 tags (a.k.a. MP3 ID3 tag renaming). Change files'
creation
and modification time stamps. [EDITOR'S NOTE: I
personally
searched this program down for the purpose of renaming MP3 Files in a
recorded playlist numerically so that all filenames in a folder would
be sorted chronologically, and then renamed with "001,002,003....etc"
at the beginning of them so that my car MP3 player would play them in
order, and also so that when I look at them on the PC, they would
appear in order regardless of date and time. This program
allowed
me to configure it to do this, and then SAVE that setting as a
preset.... pretty awesome!]Visual CD: (Added October 31st, 2008) Are you archiving documents, pictures, music, videos, and other files to optical media? If so, you know that it is quite frustrating to find that file you are looking for if you ever need it in the future once you've moved it from your computer. Sure, you can label your discs with as much information as you can, but what if you could remember only the name of a file instead of what disc it was on? If so, Visual CD is the fast and easy way to help you out. Visual CD is a disk cataloging tool to index the contents of your media storage such as CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs, BlueRay Discs, USB disks, hard disks, folders and allow you to search the contents at a later date. Visual CD can index the files from the media by name, date, ID3 tag data, audio-video and picture information, generate thumbnail from picture and video files, and even catalog files which are contained in Zip/Cab/Rar/7-Zip archive files. Additionally, you can password protect catalogs in case you want to hide sensitive filenames from prying eyes, create MP3 playlist file without having the physical disks in the drive. Upon insertion of the corresponding disk, you can open files, extract Zip/Cab/Rar/7-Zip archive, splitting files, and more. Visual CD is easy to use! The Windows Explorer-like style ensures that you will not find any difficulties to use it. Visual CD also support full Windows visual style and user friendly interface. Just try it and love it! Disk Xplorer Pro: (Added October 31st, 2008) Organize all your files on CDs/DVDs: music, photo and video, downloaded archives... and browse your collection offline! This application is a powerful tool for catalogizing all CDs, DVDs, floppies, ZIP disks, or other removable media, hard drives, network drives, or even FTP servers on the Internet (they are called volumes). Entire structure of volumes can be cataloged as well as internal structure of various archive files (ZIP, RAR, ARJ, LZH, CAB, TAR/GZIP, ACE, JAR and others) including self-extracting installers (EXE). Disk Usage Analyzer: Ever wondered what's using up so much space on your hard disk? Disk Usage Analyzer will help you find out. This tool provides a familiar Windows Explorer view of your system which includes the size, space used, slack space and file count of each folder including sub folders. It displays a pie chart or bar chart of the selected folder highlighting the big folders or files. Use the explorer or charts to find those big files or the wasted space. The display updates automatically following any file system changes making it a simple and effective monitoring tool. Includes file filters, customizable html reports, save chart to jpg tool, shell extension tools to build a shortcut collection for quick access to frequented folders and to quickly analyze a folder from Windows Explorer. Works with all local fixed and removable drives as well as remote network drives and mapped drives. PageDefrag: PageDefrag defrags your Windows page file, Registry hives, event log files and hibernation files. These are files that the built-in Windows defragger is unable to defragment since they are open for exclusive access when Windows is running. PageDefrag is a boot-time defragmentation utility - it reboots the computer and defragments those files at boot-time, that is, before all the subsystems in Windows start up. The utility only works in Windows NT, 2000 and XP. DriveImage XML: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() DriveImage XML is a hard
disk
imaging utility that allows you to backup a PC's hard disk or
partition from within Windows XP (XP Home and/or XP Professional
only). It can image a partition that is currently in use (such as
the system drive), compress the image while backing up, restore
an image to another partition/drive and clone a drive. Note that
although it is able to image the system drive while you're
working in it, it cannot restore the image to the system drive if
it is currently in use (obviously). The solution is to use their
BartPE plugin (what they call the "WinPE boot CD-ROM") to create
a BartPE CDROM. You can then restore your system partition after
booting from the CDROM.Eraser Secure Data Removal Tool: Eraser is a Windows utility that allows you to securely erase files, file slack space or cluster tips (the space that is not occupied by the data in a file, but nonetheless allocated to that file by the operating system), Windows virtual memory swap file, unused space on a hard disk, or an entire hard disk or floppy disk or Zip disk or the like. It is able to wipe data using pseudo-random data (or any combination of data that you specify), any number of times you wish (eg, once, or using the US Department of Defense (DOD) recommendations of either 3 times or 7 times, or the Gutmann recommendation of 35 times, etc). It is also able to erase the filenames in the directories for files you delete. The program is open source and works under Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. Unlocker: Unlocker uses a variety of methods to delete the persistent or locked files, including attempting to close the handle, killing the process holding the file open, unloading the DLL that may have open the file handle, scheduling the file to be deleted on the next reboot, etc. It integrates with Windows Explorer and can be accessed simply with a right click on the filename within Explorer. A command line interface is also available. The program works under Windows 2000, XP and 2003. *** THIS IS FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY!!!***

FREE NINTENDO
DS SOFTWARE LINKS:
All that being said, it seems to be all the rage these days to have a flash cart for your handheld game machine. This includes PSP, GBA, and, of course, the Nintendo DS. In fact, there's a handheld out there now that embraces this idea... check out the GP2X which runs on Linux and uses SD Flash cards instead of game cartridges. This idea of using flash carts on your handheld introduces the potential to turn your "game" into virtually anything, from being a PDA to running retro console games, to allowing you to use any of the THOUSANDS of "Homebrew" (homemade) applications and games that have been made by folks out there who like to program, just because... You owe it to yourself to check these links out. DSOrganize: DSOrganize is meant as a homebrew organizer application for the Nintendo DS that should have come built in in the first place. It is currently capable of storing daily and hourly memos, addresses, todo lists and simple scribbles. It also includes a full file browser and calculator. The file browser is capable of displaying images and playing back many audio formats as well as launching homebrew and viewing/editing text and html. Internet capabilities of DSOrganize include an IRC client, an online homebrew database, streaming audio support, and a rudimentary web browser. NDS Bible: A powerful Bible application which includes (at the time of this writing) 4 different versions of the Bible. It's still in its fledgling stages, but it is currently the most up-to-date and usable bible program available for the DS. Turn your DS on its side and read it like a book, it's GREAT!. NesDS: NES emulator for DS, a port of PocketNES, taking advantage of the DS hardware for better scaling and compatability. It was originally merely ported from PocketNES to the DS, adding some additional features like rewinding and fast-forward with the L and R buttons, using the touchscreen for the menu. Another user later obtained the source and modified it to allow for save files and savestates on supported cards. With the recent addition of DLDI support however, NES DS is now compatible with nearly all flash carts/cards. DLDI Right-Click: DLDI Right Click, also known as DLDIrc, is a tool written to allow you to click any .nds (and also .gba or .bin, if you wish) file within Windows and patch it with the DLDI file of your choice, thus helping to make the .nds file compatible with your individual flash cart. LMP-NG: This is an iPod clone for your DS. Check this out, it functions EXACTLY like an iPod, except it's easier to transfer your files to it, seeing as how you don't have to install iTunes or convert any of your music to the iPod format to work on it. Just copy this .NDS file (patched w/DLDI of course) and some of your music anywhere on the flash cart, and you're ready to go! MoonShell: Moonshell is a multimedia player for the Nintendo DS. It is capable of playing music files (wav, mp3, ogg), displaying text files, displaying pictures (jpg, bmp) and playing video (to play video in moonshell you must first encode the video files using Moonshell dpg tools). Moonshell will transform your Nintendo DS into a universal multimedia player. MrBass's Best DS Homebrew: Here's a short list of some favorite tools & games made by the online community for use on a DS with a flash cart. NDS Homebrew: This is the LONG list. Kind of a library-of-congress of homebrew applications, games, tutorials, and more!

KARAOKE
SOFTWARE LINKS: AudioGrabber: Audiograbber is a beautiful piece of software that grabs digital audio from cd's. It copies the audio digitally-not through the soundcard-which enables you to make perfect copies of the originals. It can even perform a test to see that the copies really are perfect. Audiograbber can also automatically normalize the music, delete silence from the start and/or end of tracks, and send them to a variety or external MP3 encoders, such as Fraunhofers L3enc, or even use some MP3/WMA encoders internally for automatic creation of MP3's. Audiograbber can download and upload disc info from freedb, an Internet compact disc database. Here's the best part -- it is the ONLY -FREEWARE- program I've found that can rip CD+G karaoke CD's (protected or unprotected) into BIN files, MP3+G or WAV+G. MP3+G Toolz: A simple-to-use program which allows you to RIGHT-CLICK on a folder full of .BIN files (for example, BIN files you've ripped using AudioGrabber) from a CD+G karaoke CD, and then convert them into MP3+G files or directly into .ZIP files (with the MP3 and CDG files inside it) for use with karaoke hosting software. CDG Plugin for WinAmp: Turn Winamp into a karaoke machine. Allows for you to play CDG files along with mp3's and other supported formats. Just place the CDG file in the same folder as the music file, and a window will open up that displays the information. AutoKDJ: Currently released as FREEWARE (but most likely will not stay as such) AutoKDJ is an entire Karaoke hosting system that encompasses everything from managing your karaoke rotation, playing the songs, showing graphics on multiple displays, and even using e-Books (remote laptops used to submit songs) and exporting song book data for printing. Expect more items to show up in this section soon...

PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE LINKS:
HexPlorer: (added November 18th, 2008) As the author, Icy, puts it: "Hexplorer, a program I'm currently working on in my free time can be downloaded from here. It is free hex editor for Windows, licensed under GNU GPL. This program was created as an answer to my needs, I hope you'll find it useful too. The program is currently not evolving due to lack of time and it's complexity, I'm just fixing bugs, so I would be very pleased if you wrote to me and send suggestions and bug reports, I could improve and debug this program better then. Current version is 2.6. " XVI32: (added November 18th, 2008) XVI32 is a freeware hex editor running under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. The name XVI32 is derived from XVI, the roman notation for the number 16. XVI32 and all of its components are developed by Christian Maas (except for RxPopupMenu from RxLib which he is using since version 1.6). HxD: (added November 18th, 2008) HxD is a carefully designed and fast hex editor which, additionally to raw disk editing and modifying of main memory (RAM), handles files of any size. The easy to use interface offers features such as searching and replacing, exporting, checksums/digests, insertion of byte patterns, a file shredder, concatenation or splitting of files, statistics and much more. Editing works like in a text editor with a focus on a simple and task-oriented operation, as such functions were streamlined to hide differences that are purely technical. For example, drives and memory are presented similar to a file and are shown as a whole, in contrast to a sector/region-limited view that cuts off data which potentially belongs together. Drives and memory can be edited the same way as a regular file including support for undo. In addition memory-sections define a foldable region and inaccessible sections are hidden by default. Furthermore a lot of effort was put into making operations fast and efficient, instead of forcing you to use specialized functions for technical reasons or arbitrarily limiting file sizes. This includes a responsive interface and progress indicators for lengthy operations. Hackman Suite: (added November 18th, 2008) Hackman is a freeware advanced hex editor, disassembler and template editor. Comes with cryptography capabilities, decoding with ready and self-made algorithms and a fully-featured editor. You can edit virtually any file, disk, ZIP drive, Ram Drive, Smart Media, Compact Flash I & II, IBM Microdrive or Physical RAM with the ease of a word processor. Online Libraries cover any topic you might be interested in, from how to use the program to detailed processor instructions. Supports plugins (date and version changer, icon extractor and merger/splitter are few of them) and comes with a SDK to help you create your own plugins. You can also disassemble any source into a variety of processor opcodes or create your own instruction set. (Note: This is Hackman Lite V6.02 - The last freeware version of Hackman. If you are interested in the latest version, you can get the demo version from HERE.)
